Reccomended Resources
We're all standing on the shoulders of giants! Here are some of our favorite websites, books, and other resources which have guided us in our field work, and can hopefully guide you, too!
The website features an interactive ArcGIS story map of the new Kansas Ecological Systems Map. Courtney was part of the crew which surveyed the whole state of Kansas, dividing it into 49 ecological systems!

The website describes Ecosystem Influencers, and breaks down Grasslands, Woodlands, Wetlands and Floodplains, and Other Ecosystems.
This website contains information on "1039 species of forbs, grasses, sedges, rushes, trees, and other woody plants found growing in Kansas."

You can search by either common or scientific name! Plant descriptions include in depth botanical detail, uses, distribution, and often historical and etymological facts.
This trusted resource includes guides on how to plant native gardens!

Guides discuss 3-year-plans, sod removal and solarization, and site assessments.
*Please note that plants from Prairie Moon Nursery, based in Minnesota, are meant for a different ecoregion than we have in Kansas. We encourage you to source ecotypes that are local to where you live.
While Kansas and Illinois showcase a different diversity of native wildflowers, this resource is still extremely valuable, especially in eastern Kansas.

Our favorite feature: Plant descriptions include faunal associations. Meaning, you can learn which insects to expect on a particular plant, and who likes to eat it.
