Woody Species Removal at Prairie Park

Come support a beloved remnant prairie in the heart of Lawrence! We will learn about native ecosystem restoration at Prairie Park through the removal of smooth sumac.

Time & Location

Jul 25, 2023, 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM

Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St, Lawrence, KS 66046, USA

About the event

This is your opportunity to support a cherished remnant prairie in the heart of Lawrence! We will be focused on the removal of woody species, primarily smooth sumac (Rhus glabra) . While sumac is native, it can overtake a prairie in the absence of the intermittent burns which historically swept the prairie and maintained the balance of our ecosystems.

No experience needed - our team will provide education, tools, and gloves. Please come prepared to work outside, including wearing long pants and closed-toed shoes. Also bring your own water bottle, snacks, bug spray, sun block, and hat. There is a bathroom on site. No RSVP required.

This series of workdays are in collaboration with Lawrence Parks and Recreation.
